An Elder grown primarily for its finely and deeply cut, golden yellow foliage. This award-winner (Award of Garden Merit, Royal Horticultural Society) is similar to another yellow-leaved elder, S. r. 'Plumosa Aurea', but suffers less from sun scorch. The leaves are bronze in early spring, making elegant companions for yellow Tulips. The creamy yellow flowers appear in midspring and produce glossy red fruit later in the season. To get the brightest, freshest foliage, however, the plant should be pruned hard in late winter, which removes most of the flowering stems. The richly colored foliage that results more than makes up for the loss. Grow 'Sutherland Gold' in a moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
DESCRIPTION: Hz 36-7s+w. Ht 8-10'. Creamy yellow clusters of bloom in May are followed by red fruit. Foliage is finely cut, golden yellow. Generally grown and pruned for foliar growth rather than for fruiting.SUGGESTED USE: In shrub border, to attract birds, as specimen planting.CULTURE: Full to partial sun. Not fussy about soil; average garden soil is fine. Space 8'apart. Prune hard in late winter to get the brightest foliage.PROBLEMS: Generally free of insect or disease problems.
